Article and Poem: “Bondi at the break of dawn.”

I love swimming!

I can not think of a better hobby anyone could have than to get up at the break of dawn and dive into the ocean of waves, testing your endurence and ability to fight-swimming in the swells of Bondi. You might ask, why am I writing about Bondi in particlular? It would be easy to say that the picture sent to me this morning, inspired me to write a poem about swimming and a life style that most people can not relate to: call me a ‘wax head’ however , swimming is apart of our culture as Australians; Surfing is also very much part of those that just love that added challenge on the swells.

At this time of year in Australia, it being August and all, it can be said that it is more than a challenge to contemplate on entering the water, let alone sit on a surf board and wait to catch the perfect wave crest, that would carry you into a tube and have you being being chased by ‘roaring thunder’, as you make your way closer to the shores and landing on your feet, walking on the sandy beach rerunning the wave you rode and saying to yourself:”What a Beaut…How awesome!” Now how many of you can relate to that? Well, I would say more that a few people, men and women alike would be able to relate to that sensation.

Never the less, many would agree that Surfing has come a long way. In fact they have courses at University for those that want to study ‘Surfing  coupled with Marine -biology’. WHERE? To be honest, everywhere! I know for a fact ‘Surfing Courses’ exist in Plymouth UK, In Hawaii  and California in the United States and of course in Queen’s land and New south Wales in Australia. Ok, that is not every where. There is a Diploma of Sport Management and surfing studies, as well as a Bachelor of Sports and Exercise Science at the Sothern Cross University in Australia. It consists of a 1 year course of full time study and then 2 years of part time study.

The end of the course students would be able to work in the Surf Indistry of manufacturing, the management of marketing surfing equiptment and also being involved in the Surfing Tourism of Events organisation of Surfing Events world wide. In the UK they have the Surf Science and Technology BSc. It is a study of Surf culture, history, marketing, fitness, and environmental studies all contribute to a diploma that the college hopes will prepare graduates for careers in the surf industry, or in environmentally-conscious non-profit companies. The  links below would help anyone who is interested in making their hobby a full time occupation.

While being absorbed in talking about vocational guidence for students wanting to pursue a career different to that of their parents I neglected to analyse the essence of living. Life is beautiful and can only be appreciated if we connect ourselves with Nature. Swimming is that connection.  Swimming not only is it a hobby, but a way of life that enhances health and well being. It is energizing and helps the body to remain strong, helping one to mainain good health and a long life- enjoying all spects of life. Try it! Once you do get involved in winter swimming and surfing, there is no turning back! YOU BECOME ADDICTED!

Breathing in the fresh crisp cool air…

Standing on the cliff heads he is there…

Off loading his board ‘n ‘waxing it down he came to see…

The swell and the waves thundering and hammering on the beach to be..

There with wet skin like a glove fits on…

Protecting the temperature of the body strong..

Living the ritual at Bondi at the break of dawn…

The surfer’s paradise..don’t get me wrong…

It is a life style none can beat…

Being magnetically drawn to this competitive feat …

As our warrior joins the warriors of the waves to seek

Notoriety ..a challenge ..the waves to beat!
