The banks of the river determined my destination…
The thought of crossing the torrent…
Made me stand still in my stride…
The wonder of Freedom was my fascination…
Together with the values, I hold with pride!

Why are people forced to flee their homelands of complication…
Seeking a better world as they stride…
Confronting a river bank that leads to a destination…
Not knowing what would be sought on the other side!

The banks of the river determined my destination…
The thought of crossing the torrent…
Made me read the signs…
The power of your strength and determination…
Is the only answer that would help me decide!

Why are people forced to flee their homeland of complication…
Seeking a better world in their stride…
They could seek others with the same determination…
Knowing that they could change the current in their homeland with only if they tried!

The banks of the river have always determined my destination…
The thought of crossing the torrent…..
Has always made me stand in my stride…
Determined to change things with pride and perception…
Can change the current in a homeland with pride!

Earlier this Summer, a sad story was reported of a family tragedy. The parents of three children had attempted to cross the banks of the River Evros in the North of Greece. They were two teachers with three sons. The heartbreaking news of the mother drowning with her son was tragic. The father made it to the other side on the Greek border but his family didn’t. Search parties are still looking for the two young boys.

What would you do? If you lived in a country that had changed to a point where things were difficult, would you leave or would you stay and try to change things with other people that were likeminded? In conventional wars fought in the past in this region. Greece fought against occupational forces for 265 days in WW2. The resistance in Greece was far more determined than in any other country in Europe. Many people had fled to other countries for a better life. Some people found the better life but others didn’t. There were also those that stayed behind. They stayed behind in the hope of changing things and working for a better life rather than seeking it.

What would you do?

In recent years, this region is also experiencing a course of different wars. They are not conventional. They are economic wars and Displaced human wars being strategically directed to ‘torrents’ similar t those found on the banks of rivers. It is true that in war situations CHAOS exists. In this CHAOS only some benefit…because CHAOS IS A LADDER FOR THOSE WHO SEEK TO CONTROL.

Waking up to this fact might help people to seek the power they have in bringing a change to the light of things. Do we have the power? To this question, I do not know the answer, however, I have seen what has been done in the past in history.
