‘The Wind Festival’ held at Bondi Beach yesterday, celebrated the coming of Spring. It was wonderful to see that it brought people together from different cultures under the same banner: “Spring is here ! May the Kites fly with a cheer!” The Hellenic Lycium of Sydney together with other cultural presentations danced to the tunes of ‘Sirtaki’ being cheered with shouts of : “Opa!” from the audience as the children played on the beach of Bondi.

The mid-September sunshine made it a perfect day for everyone to absorb the sun. A cultural event, the Wind Festival closely linked to Australian culture as I remember it, where people used to spend Sunday afternoons walking and talking along the prominade at Bondi Beach. It was also a common sight to walk into a milk bar and buy a milk shake, as you sat on the beach watching the waves rolling onto the shores of Bondi. Today the events of the day were more community orientated. This was a welcomed sight watching people flying kites on the beach of Bondi. The kites dressed the sky with with activity welcoming the Sring and allowing people to get together bringing people of different cultures together. The aromas and sounds made the even truly Australian. The events of the festival were well staged and the organizers should be commended.

Australia was enjoying Spring while in Greece, we enjoyed a beautidul Sun -basked Sunday , having entered autumn preparing to encounter winter.

Poem: “The Wind Festival”

A message from far away came …

To whisper to me with something to say:

“Where you had grown from a child you can see…

People have gathered together to be…

Celebrating the coming of the Spring…

With all the changes that stimulate one from with in…

listening to waves at Bondi…

Celebrating a Culture that is alive…

A culture combined with love…

Bringing people closer under the sun…

Flying those kites high in the sky ohh what fun!”

I saw everything that was described for me to see…

Seeing people closer to Nature naturally…

With kites bearing notes on their tails carefully…

Wishes expressed  by the kite bearers of the day, they be…

Wishing for a better future for all in every way..

Dancing to the ‘sirtaki’ with something to say…

Making me feel proud of Australian and Greek culture musically…

Celebrating THE WIND enjoying life festively!
